Kolkata-born journalist and broadcaster Amol Rajan will host BBC quiz show University Challenge from autumn 2023.
He will replace Jeremy Paxman who has been the quizmaster since the show was revived by the organization in 1994.
Rajan, a cricket enthusiast, was appointed BBC news editor in 2016 and presented Radio 4 Today last year.
He previously worked as an editor for The Independenthe was the first non-white person in the UK to hold such a position in a national newspaper.
On his latest appointment, Rajan said it was his “dream come true” to host his “favorite TV show” that he had “obsessed” for years.
He said he was immersed in the “high standards, brilliant theme music, and inspiring contestants” of University Challenge.
“It is the best solution to dispel doubts among young people, allowing millions of us to test our minds with the better minds of the new generation, and to annoy and impress our families by barking answers from the sofa” said the journalist from India.
He described Paxman as a “giant of British culture” who, with his “great intelligence” and “energy” provided “a format and show, as strong as ever”.
Rajan, who moved to the UK at the age of three, attributed his success to his late father Varadarajan’s “love of knowledge that I instilled in him as a child”.
“I will use my first 10 Starter (a phrase often used to introduce the first question) to him – and millions of quiz players, like me, who love those rare moments when they know the answer before the students do,” said Rajan, 39, referring to his new role. .
The BBC said Rajan will step down as its news editor later, but will continue as a presenter on BBC Radio 4 Today.
University Challenge, Britain’s longest-running quiz show, is produced by Lifted Entertainment, part of ITV Studios, and is based on Richard Reid’s College Bowl format, the agency said.
