Sunday’s Sutton Rd. East Avon Accident Catalyst in Petition for Intersection Improvement

On Sunday, August 15, a bad accident occurred at the corner of Sutton Rd and Rt. 15, East Avon, and it’s not the first. In fact, there have been serious accidents at that intersection many times over the years.

In the Sunday accident, one car T-boned the other, and there were serious injuries resulting in a neighbor having to get two little girls, 2 years and 4 years out through the smashed windshield. The 2-year-old was not breathing or responsive until EMT’s arrived, and the Dad was cut up.  His girlfriend was trapped inside the vehicle, unresponsive, and was Mercyflighted to the hospital after firemen extracted her from the car in which she was trapped.

Greg Norry, a neighbor who has lived at 5641 Sutton Rd., near the intersection for 21 years, rushed to the scene of the accident, and was able to help, but notes this is not the first time there has been a bad accident there.  “I’m not talking about fender benders,” he commented on Facebook,” I’m talking about high speed T-bone accidents….something has to be done now, not after someone dies.”

According to Norry, “From Sutton Rd looking north, it’s 75 yards to where  you can first see a car crest the hill. That comes to about 4 seconds of time before impact. …looking to the south there is a dip in the road that is 90 yards away and with shadows from trees, cars can disappear. That comes out to 5 seconds before impact.” Norry has measured the distance.

Norry, who has witnessed many very serious accidents at that intersection in past years, has initiated a petition asking the state to do something before someone gets killed. For that reason, he is asking the New York State Department of Transportation to

Put in a 4 Way Stop Sign.
Also install a full traffic light. (A flashing light will not improve the situation because drivers can’t see oncoming traffic.)
Lower the speed limit to 40mph from Rts 5&20 to the town of Lakeville, since here are multiple bad intersections south of Sutton Rd. 390, Triphammer Rd, Quicklees Gas Station, Rt 256.

Norry is going door to door with a petition, but also has an online petition at Petition · Improve Safety @ Sutton/Lake Rd and NYS Rt15 Intersection ·
